Capture setting for Canon XH-A1 shooting in DV 16:9 native

collect all dependent files?

hi, i have FC Express but i don't think that matters...

i made some sort of mistake with scratch discs and i seem to have render files on my hard drive and on my external drive where i am editing my project. they are taking up a ton of space.

1. are these render files necessary to the project?
2. shouldn't they be deleted every time i 'save all' or 'save as' ?
3. can i somehow collect and put the entire project with all dependent files in one place and then delete everything else?
4. i have collected these render files and put them into my trash and the project still opens and works. does this mean they can be deleted?

i am new to all this so please be easy with your vocabulary... ; )

online a sequence in fcp / fce with tc issues

Long time lover first time user. See the make clips independent option, can you use this on a (sub clip) sequence and then online. Digitised entire tape on fly as using express (never again). Took months for production to pay up / make up there mind and I needed the space for other projects. Now getting pre and post roll issues on 50% of the clips. Have set pre and post roll to zero, still not having it. Fully edited piece. In avid if you select the sequence and capture it only takes the video from the clips it needs not all the master clips referenced. What is the best way if any to achieve?

Have a version of fcp also but will not open the project (as older).

Any suggestion welcome.

Obtaining Software/FCP

I'm just curious how the bulk of you have obtained your software. I recently graduated from school (as a film major) and now that I'm out, really have few resources and need to get myself started.

The bulk of my peers have pirated FCP and the Adobe Creative Suite, but is there anyway around that?

I've been offered freelance editing work, but don't have what I need and being fresh out of school and in need of work, I don't have several grand to blow on the software I need.

Are there any grants for recent graduates out there or employment possibilities that provide the basics (in terms of post-production)?

HD-Flash issues

Hey:

I shot a video that is now ready to go on the web. The video was shot in HD and has been converted from Final Cut to flash. The problem that I am having is the images have gray streaks going across the entire screen. Could somebody tell me the best way to convert this from final cut into flash where no streaks will appear in the final rendition?

Subclips vs. Clips

Hi all--

I am trying to get organized editing my first big (i.e. long form documentary) project...Got 80 hours of footage to sort through...

I was logging and capturing my clips...But then I decided it might be faster, less wear and tear on my camera gears, and less degradation to the tape quality if I just do Capture Now for 30 minute segments. I have been breaking these segments in subclips. What are the pros and cons of this method? Can I now delete the master clips once the subs are made? Or I am just shooting myself in the foot here??

And, by the way, what the dif between sub clips and the "make clip independent" option?

Advice/info is much appreciated.

I've been working as a freelance editor for a few years. I used to live in Venezuela, but since October I've moved to Spain. I set up a website: www.carlosopitz.jimdo.com and I've gotten some occasional small to tiny gigs (being paid 150€ tops). I am looking for some advice you can give me to help myself gain some notoriety in a big city market (in this case Madrid), what kind of strategies might work or that are recommendable. I'm 26 and I'm full of enthusiasm but I'm really looking forward to be able to obtain a more stable income of money.
I've put my website on some craigslist-like sites here in Madrid, and I've also pasted some physical ads on a couple of cinephile oriented places... Do you think it could be a good idea to send unsolicited cover letters or demo reels to production facilities?
If u can take a look at my website and watch my demo-reel I'd love to hear your criticisms/opinions both about it and my website.

Compression

Question: I'm currently exporting a short 2 minute project from FCP using Quicktime Conversion. It's ending up as a 2 gig file and I need it to be 1 gig so I can upload it to youtube.

Should I try to configure the conversion to reduce the file size (and if so, do you have any tips?) Or would I loose any quality if I simply ran it through Squeeze at this point?

Other info: 2 minute clip shot in HDV on a Cannon HV20, exporting from FCP using Quicktime Conversion H.264 Key frame every 24 best quality.

Shooting directly into FCP, uploading in real time?

I recently read an article (I forgot where, that's my problem) about the ability to shoot directly into FCP, thus uploading in real time. In other words, this project was shooting with the camera tethered to a lap top and all of the footage was being recorded to tape (in the camera) while simultaneously being uploaded to the lap top.

This seems like it would save me a lot of time and be incredibly useful for a project that I'm working on. I've tried to google it, but I think I'm asking the Google the wrong question, because I haven't been able to find an answer. Anyone familiar with doing this?

So .... it's here in my hands and I like it.

Lots of control for a tiny little camera.

But ...... how the hell do I get it to work with FCP? Everything on the camera seems to be set right and they are seeing each other. Here are my settings.

Sequence Preset: HDV-1080i60
Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: HDV Firewire

I launch the "Log and Capture" window, but see no picture.

Any suggestions?

Best method for pan-and-zoom (Ken Burns effect)

I've been able to pan-and-zoom of still images using keyframes in FCP but the result is awkward and I still haven't figured out the "ease in" and "ease out" options (seems like either the beginning or the end of the pan is effected but not the other). Is Apple's Motion a good program for this? If not, do you have a recommendation?

Multiclip edit

So I have a live music event with four camera angles. I made multiclip and try to edit, but the video rags and can't play more than 10 seconds.
My macbook pro is 2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo with 2 GB memory. But the clip is stored in external hard drive with USB2.0. Do I need to switch to faster external drive, something with firewire 800? Or is there any trick to make this run smoother? I tried different playback setups, but don't seem to help.

ADVC110

VCR hooked into ADVC110 with red/white/yellow cables. ADVC hooked into laptop with firewire. I can see the video and capture it in FCP 4.1...sometimes. Sometimes the "esc" to end capture now does not end it and I have to force quit FCP.

Using Non Controllable device.

Sometimes FCP tell me scratch disk is full when it's not. And sometimes get massive .av files that don't open and don't want to go into the trash. Moving it into the trash goes on forever. I shutdown computer, restart it and file goes into trash no problem.

Why does "esc" not work all the time for capture now?

Jittery still frames

I'm working on a project where I have a number of still frames (made from the video we shot).

When compressed and viewed on a CRT as DVD video I get parts of the images jittering. I'm not sure if this is a compression or interlacing issue. Anyone have any ideas?

question on capturing

So my external hard drive crashed and couldn't recover all the video files for my feature length documentary. I have entire movie mastered on to a mini-dv. But I still have to capture from original tapes because the master has english subtitle printed. I'm trying to produce DVD so I need to get rid of subtitles and add them back as DVD option. I started to capture from the original tapes on only the parts that have subtitles.

My question was: are the images captured from the master mini-dv and original mini-dv tapes same quality? I thought they were, but not 100% sure. I started to think that if I capture from the master tape, the image had gone through the video head one extra time, therefore the quality has been lost?

What do you think?

problem with rendering

Hello... I tried posting this in the editing tribe a few weeks ago and got no response, so I thought I'd try it here..

I've been working on this project for several months, and about a month ago, the drive I was working with (500GB) became full. When I was rendering my work, I would occasionally get the error message stating "Not enough room on disk - use render manager to free up space" or something to that effect. I opened up the render manager and deleted some of the renders for timelines i was no longer using, and that temporarily solved my problem until I was able to upgrade to a larger drive.

However, in the meantime, I started noticing that final cut was automatically deleting some of my render files. I would open up my project and the entire timeline would appear blue (rendered) but as soon as I would change something and need to re-render, a whole series of clips I hadn't touched suddenly required rendering. It was essentially as if final cut had deleted my render. Now that I've upgraded drives, I'm still experiencing this problem, despite having tons of free space. I've tried renaming/resaving the project under a new name and I get the same problem. Last night I rendered my entire timeline and saved it. Today, when i opened up the project file, there was about 6 minutes worth of rendering that had to be done. It's pretty annoying.

Is there some setting I inadvertently changed? Should I go back and re-render every timeline in this project? (there's a lot... about 30 of them)... I certainly don't want to do it.. right now, my main timeline is the only one i'm concerned about... but perhaps it's linking the render back to another timeline which is unrendered. That's really the only thing I can think of that would be causing this.

I haven't been able to find any info on this in my manual or online. any advice you have would be appreciated.

Deleting the background

I shot a video with a couple speaking before the camera. The CEO watched it and found the background to be miserably distracting. She asked me if I can delete the background so that the couple are the only ones in the frame. Is this possible? If so, how can I do it so it doesn't look like shit?

capture problems with canon XH A1 and FCP hdv setup

So I'm using the HDV 1080 60i easy setup option and trying to capture from my Canon XHA1. The problem is that I get frequent time code breaks even though there are none on the tape. I have the break up clips on rec start/stop option toggled off.

Is there a specific capture setting I need to use for my camera, I can't seem to find any info on this anywhere yet.

creating custom transitions

does anyone know how to make your own transitions and then save them as transitions? I couldn't seem to find anything about it in the manual, but I know it's possible. There's an effect I need to replicate over and over in a 90 minute video - I can do it with key frames, but doing key frames on transitions 100 times is going to get OLD really fast.

final cut test

I have a job interview on monday and one thing they are testing me on is final cut. Granted, I do not have to be a professional editor, but I really need to brush up on it, since its been awhile. I have a copy of final cut, an older version from a few years ago, but no mac! :(

Is there anyone from the SF area who would be kind enough to let me play around on final cut for a few hours to brush up? I promise I wont fuck up your computer or do anything stupid. I have a friend helping me out on Sunday, but Id really like to get more hours of brushing up in before monday's interview, I have to get this job!

Make your video flashy like Hollywood?

So, I had this client who asked me to put together montage of photos for their company promo. They wanted it to look like MTV-like flashy stuff with a bunch of graphics. I personally hate shit like that, but I did best I can with low quality materials that they gave me(bad pictures, mpg4 videos, poorly done old promotional DVDs.)

At the end the client didn't like what I did, and took it to someone else who, in his words, "master at After Effect." I know how to use After Effect and from what I understand it isn't like a magic bullet that make everything look fancy. Often times clients who know a little about editing say can you use After Effect to make the video look cool. I feel like that's not always the case, but tell me if I was wrong.

So if anyone here knows any tricks I should know to make the video look like something out of "Hollywood", besides Jump Backs and royalty free graphics, please share them with me. I'm sure other editors here would like to know how others do.

lost visibility of media in canvas viewer

The media is still intact and when i double click on it or re-import it into the timeline the media appears but will not show itself when in playback.

Preview Disabled

I am maybe missing something obvious here... Never had any problem bringing in any footage with DV, but last night tired to pull in some footage from a Sony V1U and whie I could control the deck, I got no audio or video single coming into final cut. No setting allowed for it. This morning I used a friends cheap sony camera and a definite mini dv tape and was getting the same problem. There is no "preview disabled" in the help files.

It seems to be "unable to locate the external devices Apple Firewire NTSC" - despite being able to control the deck through the fire wire port.

Any thoughts? thanks.

I'll only leave this up for a short period, but here goes ......

So the other day, a friend's laptop had a charging issue.
He took it into an Apple store and they fixed it really quickly.
He was very happy.
Then he went to open FCP and the serial number was missing.
About a year earlier, he was working for a chap who had just bought 5.0.4
and that person loaned him the disks so he could work from home.
But that didn't help him right now and he was a little freaked out.

Then he called around and someone said "have you tried Serialbox.com"?
So he did and after some poking around and trial and error ...... IT WORKED!

Just sayin'.

Insight into Upressing

Does anyone have any good insight into up-ressing. I have to convert a 720x480 project to 960x540 - which is a pretty big jump - not to mention a much more rectanglular jump. Once it's converted I need to compress it with Flash - which isn't that big a deal - but just going straight to that frame size in flash makes quite a mess indeed.

Tips and Tricks for Longer Vids?

So, I thought that Toast had something in it that would just compress your video, even if it was longer than 2hrs onto a regular dvd. Turns out not. So then I thought maybe it was DVD Studio Pro that had this feature. But that just formatted for hours only to fail for too much video. Right now I'm exporting the piece again as an MPEG-2 at the 150min DVD level, which I really hope works (the piece is actually about 152 mins) because it is taking hours to do and I need to get past this first dvd burn and into making crazy mad copies, yo! So I figured while I'm waiting I would throw this one out to the peanut gallery and see if there is anything else I should be doing to get this thing right. So, tips, tricks, your own experiences with this kind of thing?

telecine to disk vs. telecine to digibeta??

hey all, sorry if this is slightly OT, but -- i’m about to edit a 16mm music video on finalcut... for my final dvd and digibeta deliverables, i’m wondering what the smarter choice would be -- telecine uncompressed QT to disk, or telecine to digibeta?

in the end, would a telecine to uncompressed QT somehow yield a noticeably higher image quality than a telecine to digibeta?

and assuming i’m going to pay someone to handle the online -- would i be saving a significant amount of money pulling master footage right off the hard disk during the online edit, avoiding the cost of digitizing from a digibeta deck?

and are there any other advantages to having uncompressed masters on disk? e.g. would it give the online editor more room to maneuver (in terms of color correction and effects) than if he/she had to work off of digibeta masters?

I'd be editing mostly dv, maybe some hd...some 2D motion graphics but really nothing crazy ... probably just moves on stills, titles, etc...

Canon PowerShot TX1? Compatible with FCP?

I was just checking out this new camera, Canon's PowerShot TX1, it records to an SD or SDHC card, using the following file formats:
• JPEG Exif 2.2
• DCF • DPOF
• AVI Motion JPEG WAVE

Would this camera be compatible with FCP?

Also, there is no firewire, (it comes with avi and USB 2.0 connections) but I'm assuming that with a removable SD or SDHC card, I'd simply remove the card and insert it into a card reader, then drag and drop into FCP, yes?

I like the size of this camera, which is why I'm asking. Thanks.

Video capturing mystery

I have been tearing my hair out for the past couple days. Been trying to capture some video from my last show. Tried batch capture and capture now, but dropped frames and not always in the same place. Restarted FCP, restarted my computer, trashed the preferences...nothing works. Any ideas?

Audio Difficulties

A couple of tricks to tackle in audio today...

First and foremost, have you ever had an MP3 file that when brought into Final Cut Pro took on an annoying popping sound? I'm trying to figure out what to do about that.

Also, tried using the Voice Over tool in FCP for the first time today, but couldn't get the audio signal to come through. Seemed like it should have gone right through going through either the digitizer or straight into the back of the computer, but it never took. I'm working off a G5 in this office. Tips, anyone?

Screen Capture Compatible?

I have the SnapsPro screen capture program installed and it is awful in FCP (6).
Not only does it take hours to render, when it is all done, turns to blurry mush.
Does anyone have a screen capture program you like to use in FCP?
I need it for work and the one purchased for me sucks.

how to do change notes (film)? (Help!)

I'm used to doing this on an Avid, where they have an easy app installed - but what is up with FCP?

I'm trying to use Cinema Tools, but that doesn't seem to be working. (I'm on FCP 5.1.4, which has some CT capabilities built-in, or so they claim.)

When I try to export a CT film list for version 1, and then export a CT change list for version 2, FCP / CT doesn't let me select version 1's film list (nor XML, nor EDL) to compare it to (?!)

That is, when I try to use the workflow suggested in the FCP export menu (export a CT film list of version 1, then export a CT change list of version 2) - the FCP/CT change list dialog box then asks me "where is the program file for the previous version of this sequence?" --

but then it grays out the film list of version 1 (?)

So what else could it mean or be looking for when it asks for a 'program file'?

I also tried the online app Editrace, but that wouldn't accept my exports either (?)

Work flow clues?

I would be very grateful...

We inherited a film show where the original crew neglected to input via flex files, so now we're down to inputting sound roll #'s & sound time codes by hand - if possible!

We found a way to input the sound roll numbers, but we're having trouble getting FCP to let us key in sound time codes...

We're down to entering sound TC into one of the "spare" info columns, in either the browser or in the item properties window.

We're not exactly sure if the sound EDL will catch that ...

Ideas? Suggestions?

Odd Mac Book Pro charging problem.

I have two chargers and both have the same problem, so it's the pooter.

The display in the top right window says "Calculating".

Firewire Weirdness....

I am having issues with my Lacie Firewire drive. It automatically used to shut itself off when I ejected it or turned the computer off. Now it stays on, all the time, unless I turn it off manually. Has anyone experienced this before?

tilting video clip

I am trying to position/ angle a video clip so that it fits into a still image. I have been changing the numbers in distort under the Motion tab. But there has to be an easier way. Is there a way to drag the edges or corners to distort the clip?

I am looking for a really good way to key out Green Screen

I have found a FCP plug in called DVMatte Pro by DVGarage and it does a pretty good job. (by the way anyone have a non demo version of this?) But I know that there must be something better. Anyone have any ideas? The shots that I am working with are of someone getting a tattoo that was shot by painting green where the tattoo is supposed to be and a womans face that I am putting in the spot where the green is/was. I know it would have been a lot easier to do if he had shot the skin without the green but he wants the tattoo gun running over the skin where the tattoo is. I am getting moderate results with DVMatte and an 8-point garbage matte. Really I just need something that mattes better.

For those you who have not upgraded to QT 7.4, which is the newest update - don't. It apparently disables After Effects and now there's some chatter that it's playing havoc with FCP as well. But hey, you rent "Pirates of the Caribbean."

My MacBook pro screen got a scratch... Help?

So this isn't FCP related, but I know there are a lot of wonderful nerds and geeks on this tribe who might know an answer or two.
By a freak accident, involving six or seven beer drinking friends, a bottle cap had to fly across the room and hit my laptop screen. Yes, one in a million chance... Some of you might think how stupid of me, but I'm sure any beer drinking fools here can sympathize with this situation. Right?
So is there any way to get rid of the scratch? I know it's not exactly made of plastic, so I shouldn't be using plastic polishing products. If anyone knows some kind of a witch craft or a sorcerous magic to fix this problem, please let me know.

Powerpoint

Anyone have any words of wisdom for me on getting a movie clip to look right in powerpoint?

Apparently Quicktime isn't supported by Windows.
AVI files turn into choppy pixels.
I can't find anything on WMV files.
MPEG-1 looks the best, but I can't get sound in.
Working on trying MPEG-2 now, but I've read more votes against than for that particular file type.
There has to be a way to make this better.
Suggestions? Anyone?

It records to a hard drive, then you import the files and are "supposed" to be able to work with them. I installed the stuff that came on the JVC disk that came with the camera, but to no avail. Any thoughts?

DVD Extractions

Ok, so I know I've posted on this one before, but it just never works, and it's positively maddening. I have footage on DVD and I need it digitized into FCP. FCP won't recognize my dvd player and capture footage that way. And while everyone swears by Mac The Ripper, I have never found it to do anything but make me wait a bunch of time for exactly the files I started with off the dvd itself. So the question still stands, how does one get all these damned VOB files out of the Video TS folder and into actual quicktime files that can be used in FCP? Please can't someone help me?

Capturing Error

OK - so I have a capturing problem, and wanted to see if you had any ideas!

1. I have 2 miniDV tapes that I am trying to capture. I know the video itself is fine - but the audio is super messed up - cuts in and out, scratches, hisses, screetches, etc.

2. I don't care about the audio portion of my tapes, because I am using alternate audio. All I want is the visuals.

3. I can't capture those 2 tapes in FCP. I get tape error messages (not timecode errors) that the source tape is bad. Whether I am using CAPTURE CLIP, BATCH CAPTURE, or even CAPTURE NOW, all I get is 3 seconds & then the error message. I can play it OK, to set in and out markers, etc., but when I try and actually capture, that's when the errors show up.

4. I used 3 different cameras to try and capture to no avail - all three get the same error message.

5. I know it's probably because of the corrupt audio track on the tapes, correct?

SO -

1. Can I capture in FPC without the audio track? I already unchecked the audio capture under Settings in the Log and capture utility, but that didn't seem to work, so I didn't know if there was an alternate method.

2. Is it possible to dupe the tapes, so I am using a new tape? Or will the problem just transfer over to the new tape?

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

Youtube compression mystery?

So I noticed when you look at the "embed" video html code, it start with <object width="425" height="355">, which means that's the dimension of the video after you upload to the site. So why do they tell you on the help page to compress to the size of 320x240? Is this mean Youtube is decreasing the resolution?

I've compressed the video with 425x355, but then the result came up stretched image since this dimension is not exactly 4:3. So I did 473x355. Then I uploaded the video, and it seems to work better.

Do anyone here experimented with this? Or know more about this mystery as to why Youtube do this?

capturing footage from dvd

Hey, I saw the previous posts about capturing by hitting "capture now" while playing the dvd through camera.... but I don't think I have a way to hook my dvd player up to my little canon power shot.... I do have a new macbook pro and new FCP, and some great footage of me singing for PCTV they are letting me edit further and post online, however, I can't figure out how to do it, I marked the clip I wanted in iDVD and tried playing it on the computer and hitting capture now, but it's like the 2 apps don't even see each other. Any suggestions, I am just a chubby little jazz singer in Pittsburgh trying to put some fun footage out there in the world.

Seeking FCP Sizzle Editor

My company is looking for a Sizzle spot editor. The spots are mostly for larger corporations for their convention or special shows. They last any where from 3 to 90 minutes. Many of our spots play on multiple screens simultaneously in synch. Good flow timing and an understanding of what brands respond to is helpful. Please email me any links of previous work that can be shown to the clients which represent this type of editing. Let me know if any graphics are done by you or if they were third party. We have a graphics department who can handle all the graphics needs, but it is always good to know when evaluating material. Just email me here on tribe and I'll take a look at stuff. The first job of the new year actually starts on the 29th of December (so before the new year), but we have many during the year.... would love to find some new blood right away though.

Pan-demic! ...or Why Does FCP set pan to -1 in sound levels?

Does anyone out there in cyber land know why FCP sets all incoming sound levels to Pan at -1? I have to adjust every track because of that to balance out the sound, or I am not supposed to?

Is anyone using a Canon HV20 to edit in FCP?

I bought an HV20 over the summer and have since been using it to film a project that I am now ready to edit. I got a MacBook Pro and I am trying to import HD into FCP. But, I am having so much trouble getting the HV20 to communicate with FCP. Should I just trade in my mac for an easier workflow in Premiere/DivX on a P.C.? Would anyone be so kind as to walk me though the process? (if you're in l.a., even better! i would love to buy u dinner if i could just watch you import some footage.)

color key filter

Tribesperson ... It looks like it would be that easy ... How to apply COLOR KEY FILTER

In Flash, I blued - out behind the foreground figures.
I imported the QT mov to F C Pro and moved the clip to the timeline,
I read directions in a site given me by a lab guy. I took these steps given by the site guy:

double clicked on TL Vid to be filtered ...

got to the correct filter tab and the color key control panel ...

changed key color with eye dropper, click/selected the fill color (blue) on my vid in other view port ...

moved all sliders on panel ...

rendered.

I re-read guy's directions ... It seemed so easy, but, maybe too easy.

I found no explicit mention of another STEP TO APPLY KEY FILTER.

What IS it? What'd I miss?

I only came up with the option - to render, for the next step in applying the Key Filter.

no change is visible in the (final) view port.

Even if it's 'option - destroy the time space continuum' ...
or, if my own existence outside of such, is my real problem, please tell me anyway ... I gotta' know.
I can nearly chew on a tempting piece of which animation project I bit off a bit too much, such a long time ago.

Moving Audio Clips to New Tracks

Is there a single command - or keystroke option or something - that allows you to move audio (or video) clips to different tracks without having to select and drag them? In other words, to move a clip from track A5 to A1? I have an edit where we wound up with audio from all over the place and I'm just trying to consolidate things.

weird 'export quicktime movie' issue:

Suddenly, today, my fcp is only allowing me to export audio to quicktime movie:

under the 'include' pull-down my options are onlye "left.. right.. and center" the include "audio and video" possibility is not there.

Any ideas?
