tilting video clip

topic posted Mon, January 21, 2008 - 2:02 PM by  Andrew
I am trying to position/ angle a video clip so that it fits into a still image. I have been changing the numbers in distort under the Motion tab. But there has to be an easier way. Is there a way to drag the edges or corners to distort the clip?

There's a perspective filter somewhere in the filters - it might be called 3d or something like that, I'm not in front of it at the moment so I can't tell you for sure, but play around in there. It will give you much greater control.

Yes, in the Canvas or Viewer, there's an icon at the top of the window that looks like a square with a grey circle in the middle - it's to the right of the view percentage size and the sync/open/gang control. Click there and choose 'Image+Wireframe'. You can then adjust the wireframe to distort the clip...

yeah, tried that. Not exactly what I want. I want to click on each corner and then drag it out instead of putting in numbers for the distort variables. Maybe I am just too lazy. option, command and shift have different effects on the wireframe. Any other keys?

Under Video Filters - there is a folder called "Perspective." In there is a filter called Basic 3d. Apply this to your clip. Put the clip up in the Canvas - so you can see it and in the viewer click on the Filter tan. You'll see three dials X axis, Y axis and Z axis. You can spin those dials and get the image anywhere you want.

Not sure what you're doing, but you should be able to grab any corner or side and drag it out.

At least, that's how it works on my system...

if I drag the corner, the whole clip expands. What i am trying to do is drag the corner and have the rest of the clip stay in place. Is there a key I can hold while dragging?

If you use Motion then there is a way that I know of but it is not as easy as clicking on the corners and dragging but it isn't all that hard either. Bring both your clips into motion then put the one you want on top on top then rotate and size it down as close as you can then choose the clip you want to distort then go into the inspector tab and there is a section called four corner. you have to push the little arrows for each corner until the video matches what you want. This works much better than the distort in FCP. Note that the frame around your clip does not change perspective but the clip inside will adjust.
