So, I had this client who asked me to put together montage of photos for their company promo. They wanted it to look like MTV-like flashy stuff with a bunch of graphics. I personally hate shit like that, but I did best I can with low quality materials that they gave me(bad pictures, mpg4 videos, poorly done old promotional DVDs.)
At the end the client didn't like what I did, and took it to someone else who, in his words, "master at After Effect." I know how to use After Effect and from what I understand it isn't like a magic bullet that make everything look fancy. Often times clients who know a little about editing say can you use After Effect to make the video look cool. I feel like that's not always the case, but tell me if I was wrong.
So if anyone here knows any tricks I should know to make the video look like something out of "Hollywood", besides Jump Backs and royalty free graphics, please share them with me. I'm sure other editors here would like to know how others do.

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 2:04 AMYes, clients will often "wow" over the tool and not realize 99% of everything is approach.
Really depends on the piece - but what I've found from seeing the work that has come to my company in these cases is normally the difference between the original and what we did was edge. Usually when people want that Hollywood Trailer thing - they want high impact stuff.
I know we've taken in stuff which sounds a lot like what you described and I think it can sometimes be more that the person who is primarily using AE has a history of design training vs. an editor who is usually a story teller first. Promos are more about design.
One the similar projects we had I remember some of the techniques which were:
color correct the hell out of everything - put a vignette on things, fake gradient filters on poor exterior video stuff - basically use a lot of photographic techniques to make things prettier
Break appart the still frame so the foreground and background can move seperately - or just blur the background
combine the photo and the video in a split screen with a graphic element (just a line or running line) down the center
move elements in non-linear paths... so very fast - stop to see with just a crawl - but then zooming off again.
The list goes on.
Probably, if you don't like this stuff, you've not watched it a lot. I think if you watched just a ton of it - like hundreds of them, you'd start to see formulas people use to create the effect.
That's my best tangible thoughts right now. I appreciate your honest recount of that story. -

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 12:56 PMI also think there is something to be said for refusing clients. I know that's hard to do if you need the money, but you have to know your own strengths and weaknesses. Often times by referring a client to someone better suited to their desired outcome, you'll establish yourself as an honest business person, and may even develop a mutually beneficial relationship with the person who you referred the work to.
Also, I think when you're dealing with client provided assets you have to let them know up front that it's "garbage in, garbage out", I have this feeling that your client isn't going to be happy with their "After Effects Master" either. -

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 12:54 PMtotally what mark said...
but also there are some really easy tutorials by andrew kramer (video co-pilot) for after effects, although you can do much of the same thing in motion... a really cool thing is the 3D camera thing. where you can move your camera through a 3D grpahics scene.

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 12:55 PMWow, thanks guys. I did do some of the things Mark suggested, but basically this project went down hill because of having too many fucking directors. The person I was directly in contact like it, but then someone in the line of production didn't like it, after weeks into the production.
I haven't even seen the money for all the work I put in. Sometimes, I have to just not take this kind of work, or abort the job early. -

Fri, May 30, 2008 - 1:17 PMyou have my sympathies... i hate it when 2 or 3 people start calling the shots. one reason i'm afraid to go pro.

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 4:18 PMWhen I freelanced, I learned to specify how notes were given. I first did my 1st cut, then let the client watch it. They would give me notes for a re-cut, and this 2nd cut was part of the agreed-upon price. At this point if they wanted further edits, I would charge them an hourly rate above and beyond the original price. Extra work means extra money, and this also prevented them from constantly revising their ideas and changing their minds.
And too many cooks spoil the broth, as they say. -

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 10:22 AMthis is great advice Allen. After reading about a number of horror stories I have incorporated this protocol into my client contracts as well- they get two drafts and after that, it is costs 'em extra. I think, in general, that having a really clear contract with a payment schedule and an outline of expectations from both parties inked BEFORE any work begins ensures that no one is left feeling like they got the short end of the stick or did a whole bunch of work for free. It took me a long time to finally figure that out but now I have all my clients sign a contract before I even touch the tapes.
But I definitely feel you on this situation. Argh. It is one of the most frustrating things ever. I guess it takes a couple of times getting burned before we as professionals can really find a contractual system that works for us...

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 6:10 PMI usually do that with clients, but this was sort my friend's project. I was helping them initially thinking this was going to be a piece of cake. So my friend was in between me and client. Anyway, "bro-deal" is a dangerous deal. -

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 6:13 PMoh, and it looks like I'm getting payed for the time I put in. Even though, I couldn't work to the end of the project and that sucks, but I'm billing them enough to make up for it.
Hey but thank you all for great advice. I can count on FCP tribe!

Re: Make your video flashy like Hollywood?
Sun, June 8, 2008 - 11:01 AMheheh. yeah, I actually started becoming really hardcore about contracts because of a "bro deal" gone awry. I actually think it is almost MORE important to have a contract with a friend that a client even, because it is a lot more likely that someone is going to assume something that the other person doesn't necessarily agree with.
Glad it has all worked out for ya! -
