Preview Disabled

I am maybe missing something obvious here... Never had any problem bringing in any footage with DV, but last night tired to pull in some footage from a Sony V1U and whie I could control the deck, I got no audio or video single coming into final cut. No setting allowed for it. This morning I used a friends cheap sony camera and a definite mini dv tape and was getting the same problem. There is no "preview disabled" in the help files.

It seems to be "unable to locate the external devices Apple Firewire NTSC" - despite being able to control the deck through the fire wire port.

Any thoughts? thanks.

And the answer is. If you have FCP installed already and upgrade to Tiger - there is a chance that your Quicktime didn't install properly. The solution is to remove the QuicktimeXXX.pkg (XXX being like 651, 548) from Library > Receipts and then download quicktime (not auto update, but actually download it) and then install that package file by double clicking.

The key here was that the "firewire" was "missing."
